Here’s a peek at the bonus story from Heath’s POV (contains mild spoilers):
Heath worked his fingers through Boru’s feathers, removing the burrs stuck in the dragon’s wings. A cool wind whipped through the Roost, carrying the aromas of home—apple trees, dragon musk, and the hot-metal scent of the Fireshops.
The journey to Pendark had been long and fraught. The return to Vertigon had been complicated, too, thanks to the unexpected visitor they’d brought back. Tamri was turning out to be a serious problem.
The girl had nearly killed King Siv.
Heath shoved down the memory, trying to forget he’d ever taken her to the castle. All he wanted was to collapse by his Heatstone with a mug of hot cider and shut out the world for a while. But he’d never ended a journey without tending properly to his mount.
Boru heaved a contented sigh, relaxing his giant body under Heath’s care. He was a magnificent creature, with jewel-blue scales and majestic white plumage. The Cindral Forest breed of dragons all had elegant feathered wings, like birds of prey, and strong, scaled bodies. Lizards with mythic proportions. They were intelligent and sensitive, capable of communicating and forming bonds with humans. Heath liked spending time with them better than any person he’d ever met.
“Happy to be home, my friend?” he murmured as Boru stretched his wings, scales creaking like leather. “Is that wing joint still giving you trouble?”
Boru huffed, and Heath knew what he needed even though he couldn’t understand dragons in words, as some Wielders did. He kneaded the muscles where feathered wing met scaled body, his large blunt fingers finding the softer places between the scales. Boru hummed in appreciation. The dragon was Heath’s closest friend, almost an extension of himself.
